Use wooden pallets
Using wooden pallets to raise your items off the concrete floor helps keep air flowing throughout the storage unit. This is a great way to avoid moisture buildup that items sitting directly on the floor can experience.
Use dryer sheets
One way to repel pests is by using dryer sheets. Place then in the corners of your units, inside boxes and on your furniture. The smells will keep unwanted critters away while leaving your belongings smelling fresh. It's recommended to replace the sheets once a month.
Protect your furniture
Use mattress and sofa covers and cover wooden furniture to keep items clean and dust free. If you wrap your valuables in plastic for a couple of months or years you could run into mold issues. Plastic keeps condensation inside of it and condensation could lead to mold.
If you plan to store any large furniture such as couches, dressers or even bed frames ensure those items are using primarily vertical space. Standing bulky items on their end helps maximize less used vertical space and allows you to fit more inside your unit.
It is highly recommended you have insurance for your items while they are stored in a facility. Check with your home or renter's insurance and see if you can add your storage unit.
